It would be nice to get that sensibility across without referencing a god in a religious/traditional sense. There's this notion that there's something bigger and more awesome than you. Bah! I don't know how to articulate this. The Quantum Poethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14581505455905741826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-83087418168463522822010-06-16T21:46:35.369-07:002010-06-16T21:46:35.369-07:00Thanks for sharing, very much love the last advice...Thanks for sharing, very much love the last advice!akuhnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17211501021299556583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-33981967896059580392010-06-12T21:31:03.301-07:002010-06-12T21:31:03.301-07:00I really like this notion of the noble path. Many ...I really like this notion of the noble path. Many of the do/don't items of advice might simply just be someone's way of trying to express something they've internalized for years. Stating those new intuitions is hard.

A friend recently got an academic job, and even one year in I've found it hard to express my own lessons that I've learned. The CRA materials helped, but perhaps this focus on character is a better way.Macneil Shonlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16382866616548432101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-60474758174843189512010-06-12T20:55:17.866-07:002010-06-12T20:55:17.866-07:00With regards to geographic location, I'll add ...With regards to geographic location, I'll add it's best to keep an open mind. You don't really know enough about a place until you've been there, and you can be surprised for the better or the worse.

I'd also add that you should apply early after writing those statements early. :-) Academic positions are EO, but are time sensitive as well. I don't think I've ever heard of someone applying "too early," but I've certainly heard of people applying a day before the "for full consideration" deadline as being too late!Macneil Shonlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16382866616548432101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-15440437098440242662010-02-25T14:42:36.430-08:002010-02-25T14:42:36.430-08:00I, as a grad student, agree with many bullets abov...I, as a grad student, agree with many bullets above!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04931146251238053214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-23545465818082076012010-02-22T14:50:42.165-08:002010-02-22T14:50:42.165-08:00Meng, I didn't say that the two obvious reason...Meng, I didn't say that the two obvious reasons are not important and do not relate to survivor bias. In fact, they are obvious because they are important. (I also didn't say I am not guilty of them, mostly, because I am not sure what it would mean to be guilty of reasons.) I did say I am skeptical of the career advice for the above-described reason, perhaps in addition to those two obvious ones.Yuriyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15740809505697641661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-83546603499810928532010-02-22T11:46:22.416-08:002010-02-22T11:46:22.416-08:00Wouldn't you say that survivorship bias is a g...Wouldn't you say that survivorship bias is a general form of the 2 obvious reasons you say you're not guilty of?meng_maohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06657484248733701456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-83884465811253989382009-10-29T17:50:40.731-07:002009-10-29T17:50:40.731-07:00Very englightening Yuriy, but I am not surprised.Very englightening Yuriy, but I am not surprised. The Quantum Poethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14581505455905741826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-5479393221742622912009-08-26T04:08:32.618-07:002009-08-26T04:08:32.618-07:00I share your concern on the fact that, what people...I share your concern on the fact that, what people write in blogs can't be a hard evidence.
Being a Compute Science student myself, I am quite interested to know what you have to say on your research.

Ohh, By the way, I am an aficionado of Game Theory.Badarinarayan Burlihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01664223262316163058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3790685978565286184.post-47873251830056157922009-03-27T19:04:00.000-07:002009-03-27T19:04:00.000-07:00That was a pretty badass presentation.
